New year, new patch. :) This has been collecting dust on my HD
for more than 2 years already. Lots of people reported problems
with the old patch, this was caused by not properly removed protection
checks. Back in May 2013 I started to work on a completely new patch
and had most of it finished after a few hours. The binary which was
used to start the game was Herndon HLS encrypted, the decrypter was
quickly coded and after having a look at the decrypted code I was quite
amused as all that was done was loading the main game file. So this
"protection" was completely useless! There were hidden disk checks in
the main game though, these had to be removed too. That was the fun part,
I also patched the "Close" gadget in the main menu to quit back to DOS
for a bit of extra fun.
There was only one problem left, due to the fast loading from HD the
final answer (when talking to characters in the game) was displayed for
a very short time only which wasn't good at all of course. I spent a while
to find a good approach to patch this without success and then continued
creating patches for other games/demos.
Today I had a look at this patch again, found an approach to solve the
aforementioned problem within 10 minutes (yes, really!) and finally
finished the patch.
The final answers are now displayed for 5 seconds, if you're a fast reader
and/or impatient you can skip the delay be pressing either fire or left
Supported is SPS 0083, the old patch supported a few more versions but
I don't have these. If you have an unsupported version just contact me.
Happy new year everyone, enjoy this classic from HD properly now.
