Game manual attatched please include for next update.

Disk 2 is incorrect, it is the cracked version of "Narco Police". Please supply a correct disk 2 image, otherwise I can't support your version.

Snoopy1234 (reporter)

The SPS IPF images for the 2 disk (A500 pack) version are hosted on the Turran FTP server. This is a link to those files from my Onedrive.

StingRay (developer)

That version is already supported in the patch, I specifically need Christoph's version.

Oh my gosh, that's wired. I never used disk 2 - it seems that some kind of fool overwrote it with narc.

I reconstructed it now with kryoflux. Here is the whole image:
https://www.kabel-helpdesk.de/amiga_images/BatmanTheMovie.zip

I hope that Disk 1 isn't a cracked version or something like this. At the moment when the imager runs it says "unknown version" and won't make a image of disk 1.

Snoopy1234 (reporter)

After testing the latest image provided I suggest it is the 1 disk version.
There is a post on EAB commenting about the differences in the speed of the "Batarang" throwing on the 1 and 2 disk versions. The original 2 disk version was unproportionally fast and was fixed in the later 1 disk version. This latest upload exhibits the later 1 disk style in AF.

This doesn't help the version compatibility though...

Thanks for your opinion on that, so I wait for check from Stingray and if he says that you're right I will rewrite original IPF on my Disk1. Have many thanks for your tests :)

No worries. for reference note the mention of protection differences between versions in the post.

Please leave out any speculation here, it just messes up the tickets with irrelevant and incorrect information, thank you!

It is not the 1 disk version (before requesting the correct disk 2 image, I have of course checked the version of the game). Current disk 2 image is OK, I will check if it is really an unsupported version and if so, update the patch.

note ~0013031

StingRay (developer)

It's indeed an unsupported version, file sizes differ from SPS 0006, 0019 and 1730 versions. The patch will be updated in due time.

It's very probably the very first retail release, it uses a speedlock instead of a copylock + AmigaDOS.

I remember contacting you Sting a long time ago about supporting this version.

I have proper disk images if you want them (no IPF, the disk format is unsupported)

I have updated the imager to support two more versions including yours, but as the code is different I also need to expand the game patch. That is time consuming due to the use of different exes per level, but I am working on it now. :-)

After further investigation, I can't support your 2 disk version unfortunately. The image you've used to reconstruct your 2nd disk is quite obviously not the same as the disk was originally, because one of the files the game looks for when loading level 3 has a different name.

If you tried playing your game from disk you would find it breaks/crashes when you get to level 3. :-)

If someone else comes forward with this version of the game in future, I can finish adding support, but I will be parking it for now.

Also it is probably worth deleting the images of it from the FTP/TOSEC to avoid any confusion, because they won't work:

I did some further analysis, and it is my firm belief the Quartex crack was based on this version, as the contents of the cracked Disk.1 are identical, save for some bytes in the loader which were (naturally) cracked. Disk 2 of Quartex crack has level 3 with correct filename that Chris' version would also expect.

In a nutshell, the very first 2-disk release of the uses filename "BATCAVE IFF" for level 3, and is also notable for having a major bug with highscores where they don't persist between multiple playthroughs of the game.

Chris' version/Quartex release uses filename "CAVE IFF" for level 3, and fixes highscores so they are persisted in top of chip memory. These changes also carry over into every 1 disk release that came later.

I think the chronology of releases is:
- SPS #0006
- Chris' 2-disk version (/Quartex crack)
- Non-SPS 1-disk PAL release
- SPS #0019
- NTSC release
- SPS #1730 (only release to drop the copylock protection - otherwise identical to SPS 19)

I am content to support Chris' version by combining his disk 1 with Quartex disk 2. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will be along to tell me in future but probably not. :)

Conveniently, Chris' two-disk version is identical to the non-SPS one-disk release that followed it. Almost certainly, the devs realised after release that they didn't actually need to use two disks. :)
