Summary0006736: I thought I had reported this but maybe I forgot. I played the game in 2022
DescriptionGameVersion: english,pal,2 disks
SlaveVersion: 2.0 (16.07.06) done by JOTD:

I thought I had reported this but maybe I forgot. I played the game in 2022 with the intend of beating it, then recording a youtube playhtrough on my channel https://www.youtube.com/@JemyM.
Initially I used the WHDLoad v2.0 version for the project and I replayed the beginning three times with WHDLoad, each time hitting the exact same crash near the same place. I then went on to use the ADF version from CAPS, and that version allowed me to finish the game several times without crashing, including once for my youtube playthrough.
Here's info on the crash;
After escaping the initial dungeon you get access to an overland landscape consisting of 4 outdoor sections. Between each section there is a city that you can walk through. I am able to get through the first city or cities, but eventually the game crash when passing through, with an; "Exception "Illegal Instruction" ($10) at $7FA4024 (ExpMem $72024) occured."
I do not know the exact amount of times you have to go through to new areas to crash the game, but in my testing it always happened eventually if trying to go through all four. Game-wise, since it's an rpg, you are meant to use the cities to sell items, but you can also explore all 4 segments of the overland to kill monsters for xp before you go to the 2nd dungeon of the game. Perhaps you can delay the crash if you go to the 2nd dungeon immediately but when I was playing it I tried to clear the 4 overland sections first. Thus I always hit the crash before I was able to get down into the 2nd dungeon. Potentially it could also be a crash that occurs eventually simply by passing through enough loading screens/levels.
I have saves for testing. One immediately prior to the crash, all you need to do is to walk through the city. Then I have a replay from starting all over again, where the second save is taken prior to the crash happening but I do not remember exactly how many screens I had to pass before the crash in the 2nd saves happened though as its been 3 years, I just remember it happened soon after the last save causing me to promptly quit and look for other solutions (that is when I switched to use the ADF copy for the rest of the game).
Let me know if I can provide anything else.

2 savefiles added based on 2 different playthroughs with 7 hours apart. The saves go into AbandonedPlaces2\data. The game seem to create a cosave at some point called save_00 but I do not think it is needed for you. Once the game is started in WHDLoad the save loads up if you push "Continue Old Game". Once the game is loaded, attempt to go forward once into the city, then click the right-most icon in the bottom-right corner to "walk through" the city to the next area. That is when it crashes for me. Note that they are different areas and different cities, suggesting the game will crash sooner or later no matter which area you go to first, potentially running out of memory or something.
